National Day of Truth & Reconciliation

Strawberry Festival

The Haudenosaunee people hold several festivals to show gratitude towards the natural world. Among these festivals is one that celebrates the sacredness of the strawberry plant, which is considered a woman’s medicine. Its leaves are used to make tea to help with blood illnesses, and the season of the plant is significant as it’s when babies are named in the longhouse.
The Haudenosaunee’s cycle of ceremonies revolves around the food and medicines that are significant to their community. They take pride in planting traditional seeds, a part of their identity. The grown food is shared among families who care for the garden, and the surplus is given to local schools and organizations. Their belief in acknowledging all creation inspires us to appreciate and give thanks to the natural world.
